Abstract
The water quality of Tan stream, the first tributary of Han River, was investigated from 2003 to 2007. The concentration of nutrients and organic contents such as ammonia (NH₄+), nitrite (NO₂ -), nitrate (NO₃ -), phosphate (PO₄ ₃-) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in water samples collected at the predetermined points along the Tan stream were analyzed. According to pollutant levels, Tan stream was divided into six zones. Spatial changes of annual water pollution were demonstrated by means of zone identification and strip analysis. The organic and nutrient quantities were increased about twofold in 2007 comparison with 2003. Lost of spatial area in Zone I and II in recent years suggested the rapid deterioration of Tan stream's water quality. The results showed that the present levels of COD, total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and total inorganic phosphorus (TIP) in Tan stream were about 20, 10 and 0.8 mg/L, respectively.
