Fabrication and dielectric properties of hetero-layer MLCC using PMN-PT relaxor ferroelectrics

Abstract
A new fabrication method and the dielectric properties of hetero-layer multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) using (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-xPbTiO(3) (x = 0 similar to 0.2) have been studied. Three advantages were observed; broadening of dielectric constant maximum, reducing the dielectric losses in the ferroelectric region, and increasing the maximum dielectric constant plateau compared with that of 0-3 type composite. The temperature coefficient of capacitance, TCC, in the dielectric constant maximum plateau was improved from Z5U to quasi-X7R(B) characteristics. The capacitance at any temperature was simply calculated from the algebraic sum of the capacitance value of each layer. The dielectric constant maximum of hetero-layered MLCC was almost twice value as that of 0-3 composite type. The high dielectric loss in the ferroelectric region of the higher T-max layer was reduced by the compensation of the low dielectric loss in the paraelectric region of the lower T-max layer.
