N-based precursors for carbon fibers were prepared by dry-jet wet spinning. The structure variation of PAN fibers with spinning conditions was examined by transmission electron microscopy. Defects such as micro-voids and wrinkle were found on the surfaces of the PAN fibers spun at the temperatures above 35 degrees C. After the stabilization of the PAN fibers, some of the pyrolyzed fibers showed contaminated surfaces and holes in the central part of the fibers. The change in crystal structure before and after stabilization was confirmed by the analysis of electron diffraction patterns of the pyrolyzed PAN fibers.-
