Abstract
The microbial production of 1,3-PD from raw glycerol, byproduct of biodiesel production, has a great advantage from economical and environmental standpoints. Although direct use of the raw glycerol without any pretreatment is desirable, previous studies reported that this could cause inhibition of microbial growth. In this study, we investigated the effects of the type of the raw glycerol, different microorganisms, and the pretreatment of raw glycerol on the production of 1,3-PD. The raw glycerol from waste vegetable oil-based biodiesel production generally caused more inhibition of the production of 1,3-PD and microbial growth compared to the raw glycerol from soybean oil-based biodiesel production. In addition, although the same feedstock was used in biodiesel production, the production of 1,3-PD and the extent of inhibition of growth were different among different manufacturers. This seems to be partially due to the amount of methanol included in the raw glycerol. Klebsiella strains were generally resistant to all types of raw glycerol while the growth of Clostridium strains was variably inhibited according to the type of the raw glycerol. The inhibition of Clostridium strains by the raw glycerol could be reduced up to the level obtained with pure glycerol by acid-pretreatment.
