Abstract
This paper describes an efficient and practical methodology for mascot-type face robot design to allow the natural and dynamic expression of emotion. The main idea of the methodology is to inversely apply Paul Ekman’s psychological method, which deciphers human emotions with facial expressions, to the design of a mascot-type face robot [1]. We summarize the essential features that reveal the six kinds of human emotions and extract the necessary face elements to express those features effectively. Then, these details are applied to the design of the hardware for a mascot-type face robot. As a result, we established standardized, mascot-type face robot design methodology. And we verified that this methodology is very efficient and practical by developing and demonstrating a mascot type face robot and its realistic emotional expressions.
