Abstract
Like many amorphous materials, metallic glasses subjected to high stresses can either exhibit homogeneous or inhomogeneous mechanical response. The latter mode of deformation is referred to as “strain localization” or “shear banding” and commonly observed at room temperature. The mode of deformation exhibited has a strong influence on whether the material behavior is classified as ductile or brittle, and determines the amount the material deforms prior to failure. Being able to vary the composition or preparation of such a material to alter these properties in a predictable way is an important practical goal that requires an improved understanding of the physics of amorphous solids.
