Abstract
The synthesis of biodiesel fuel from vegetable oil in supercritical methanol was investigated. The sensitivity of various parameters on the reaction was studied from a series of batch and continuous experiments. The composition of products was measured by gas chromatography and titration method. In supercritical methanol, high conversion can be obtained in a short time compared with conventional process, however, the loss of fatty acid methyl ester can be occurred due to thermal decomposition and oligomerization of reactants and products. The application of heterogeneous catalyst was examined to prevent the loss by lowering reaction temperature and decrease the use of methanol.
