- Clostridium species can produce valuable chemicals like ethanol, butanol and butyric acid. These fermentative
products of Clostridium could be used in the various fields of industry like alternative energy and chemicals. For
the isolation of Clostridium, tidal flat was collected from seashore area of Tae-An, Korea. Modified basal
medium with glucose and 3% sea salt was used and bactericidal agent was added into the medium as selection
pressure. Through subculture, 4 colonies were isolated on the plate. One of the colonies produced ethanol,
butnaol and volatile fatty acids. The bacteria was designated Clostridium sp. nov. BS-5 and its 16S rDNA
revealed 96% similarity with Clostirdium algidixylanolyticum SPL73T. Measured physiological characteristics
by API kit appeared that the strain consumed various carbon sources in 3% salt condition.
