Abstract
The effects of impurities in bio-ethanol, such as diethyl amine, acetic acid, methanol, and propanol, on the performance of direct internal reforming molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) are investigated. Single cell with home-prepared Ni/MgO internal reforming catalyst are operated using bio-ethanol with 1% of impurities. The single cell test showed that introduction of diethyl amine and methanol into the fuel respectively enhances the conversion and H2 selectivity. On the other hand, acetic acid and propanol in the fuel decreases the conversion and H2 selectivity. In addition, long term stabilities of the single cells are investigated and significant coke formation is found when the cell is operated with bio-ethanol with 1% of acetic acid.
