Abstract
Vehicle is one of the dominant sources of air pollutions which include carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC), nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particular matter (PM) in urban area. High concentrations of harmful gases and particulate matters from vehicle emissions are threat to the human health. Therefore, some countries have prepared the environmental policy which called Environmental Zone or Low Emission Zone for improvement of air quality. In this paper, we report on a novel real-time monitoring method for measurement of gaseous and particulate emissions from passing vehicles to understand the emission characteristics of various vehicles (2 diesels, 1 gasoline, 1 LPG, 1 scooter) according to driving speed (idle, low, high). Ultrafine particle concentration, size distribution, and CO, NOx, BC (black carbon) were monitored at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) internal roadside in Seoul, Korea using 2 CPCs (TSI 3010, 3025A), EEPS (TSI 3090), NSAM (TSI 3550), CO analyzer (TEI model 48), NONO2- NOx analyzer (TEI model 42) and aethalometer (Magee Scientific model AE42-7-ER-MC). When vehicles passed by a stationary monitoring site, similar peaks in the particle number concentration and gas concentration appeared. Particle number concentration and NOx concentration of most vehicles in idle condition was typically much higher than driving conditions. Generally, CO concentration was more stable than those of other emissions.
