- Recovering 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) from microbial broth was investigated using extraction with various solvents. Extraction of 1,3-PD was tested with the following solvents: metyl ethyl ketone, ethyl acetate, di-ethyl ether, MTBE, and oleyl alcohol. Among them, methyl ethyl ketone exhibited the most effective extraction performance with extraction efficiency higher than 35%. The extraction of 1,3-PD by methyl ethyl ketone was improved at pH lower than 3 or higher than 10. When 1,3-PD (20, 30, 60, and 100 g/L in water) was extracted with methyl ethyl ketone, the extraction efficiencies were 34~39% with 20, 40, 60 g/L 1,3-PD and 25% with 100 g/L PD, implying that there is a certain 1,3-PD concentration range for effective extraction with methyl ethyl ketone. The most efficient extraction was achieved with 40 g/L 1,3-PD with extraction efficiency 38.8% and distribution coefficient 0.64. When hydrophobic solvents were added to methyl ethyl ketone containing 1,3-PD, phase separation occurred into upper phase containing mainly solvents and lower phase enriched with 1,3-PD, leading an easy and simple separation of 1,3-PD from solvents.
