Abstract
Micro-SOFC membranes with nanoporous anodized aluminium oxide (AAO) as an electrode template are microfabricated. The open circuit voltages (OCVs) of the AAO micro-SOFCs are in the range from 0.2 V to 0.8 V. It is found that OCVs are increased with increasing the electrolyte thickness and decreasing the AAO pore size. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis reveals that the widened pinholes in the electrolyte layer originate due to the porous AAO structure and we postulate that the reduced OCVs in AAO micro-SOFCs is attributed to the gas leakage through these pinholes. For reducing the gas leakage, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is conducted. By filling the pinholes in the electrolyte layer with oxide films, we can obtain higher OCVs in the ALD modified AAO micro-SOFCs.
