Abstract
Recovery of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) from the complex microbial broth is a challenging work for the economical production of 1,3-PD. In this study, separation and purification of 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) was investigated using solvent extraction followed by phase separation by adding hydrophobic solvents. Among various solvents, methyl ethyl ketone exhibited effective extraction performance with extraction efficiency higher than 35%. When hydrophobic solvents were added to methyl ethyl ketone containing 1,3-PD, phase separation occurred into the upper phase mostly consisted of hydrophobic solvents and methyl ethyl ketone and the lower phase was enriched with 1,3-PD. Heptane was more effective than hexane for the separation of 1,3-PD based on the purity and recovered weight of 1,3-PD.
