Abstract
In recent years, 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([bmim]Cl) has been applied for cellulose pretreatment prior to enzymatic hydrolysis or utilized as a medium for the hydrolysis reaction. Rinaldi et al. reported that cellulose depolymerization conducted over Amberlyst 15DRY in the solvent of [bmim]Cl yielded total reducing sugars (TRS) of about 12.5%. However, such a process may cause complexity in understanding the effects of [bmim]Cl on cellulose pretreatment as well as the activity of solid acids in the hydrolysis. In this report, therefore, microcrystalline cellulose has been pretreated with [bmim]Cl and subsequently hydrolyzed over a solid acid catalyst.
