- Polyacrylonitrile (PAN), one of the most important precursors for carbon fibers, is usually modified by small proportions of acidic vinyl monomers such as itaconic acid (IA) through free radical copolymerization. The effect of IA on the performances and cyclization behaviors of PAN to form carbon fibers has been well investigated. However, the free radical copolymerization process is generally not azeotropic and the composition of each polymer chain may vary with conversion. In this study, 5 different PAN copolymers with different amount of IA comonomers were prepared through free radical polymerization at constant comonomer composition. IA was continuously added during the polymerization, monitoring the consumption of AN and IA. Copolymer composition and structure were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and FTIR.
