- Polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFC) for automobile application require an operation at elevated temperatures (> 120°C) and low humidification (< 50% rh). At those conditions, electrode kinetics are enhanced, the catalyst is less sensitive towards carbon monoxide poisoning and water and thermal management can be simplified. However, the state-of-the-art membrane, Dupont’s Nafion, has a glass temperature of about 110°C and dries out rapidly at temperatures above 100°C. Therefore, the conventional membranes cannot be used in a high temperature PEFC. In order to facilitate high temperature / low humidification operation, we develop silica filled polysulfone membranes.
