Abstract
Self assembled nano - composite approaches using phase separation in multi component system is one of the promising ways to enhance thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT= S2σΤ/κ ; S, σ, κ and T are the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and absolute temperature, respectively) because they can enable to decrease thermal conductivity caused by phonon scattering at phase boundaries. x(Bi2Te3) – 1-x(PbTe) compounds were prepared by melting elemental metals weighed to certain chemical formula x in a quartz ampoule and step cooling process. The microstructures and composition of the constituent phase were determined by x-ray diffraction and electron probe micro analysis. In this ternary compounds, dendritic and lamellar structures were clearly observed due to the phase separation. The existence of meta-stable ternary phase was also observed. In this system, three different compositional phases are observed: binary Bi2Te3, PbTe, and metastable PbBi2Te4. The thermal conductivities by phonon (κph) were estimated by measuring total thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity using Wiedemann-Franz law. The effect of multi-phase shape and density on lattice thermal conductivity and power factor also will be presented and discussed.
