Abstract
Results have been indicated that both plant species performed similar nitrification activity. CHN analysis has been shown that nitrogen content in phytoreactor comprising Typha latifolia in fermented soybean medium was slightly higher (1.5% w/w) compared to its control (1.3% w/w). It was observed that phytoreactors containing Phragmites australis in fermented soybean and activated sludge media had lower nitrogen content (0.3% w/w) compared to their control (0.4% w/w). Variation of pH and dissolved oxygen were studied. In all reactors, it was shown that pH range was between 6 and 9. Lower DO concentration (0.4-6.3 mg/L) was found in control reactors, while higher DO concentration (1.9-7.6 mg/L) and (6.0-8.2 mg/L) was found in the reactors contain fermented soybean and activated sludge, respectively. It was suggested that further approach was necessary to find the optimum condition for nitration of plant biomass using biological method.
