Abstract
The novel ionic polymers (PEVSA and PEVSS) were successfully synthesized on the basis of polyethylene backbone and spaced methylene ester pendent side chains terminated by sulfonate ionic group. The ionic polymer film displayed the various wettability and morphology after treatments in DI water, dichloromethane (DCM), and toluene, respectively. The PEVSA film in DI water showed the highest oxygen-concentration on its film in comparison with other films, and the lowest value of contact angle. AFM images of each film were taken to examine the surface morphology. The PEVSA film in DCM showed gentle waves while the PEVSA in DI water did the grain of wood. A noteworthy result is that the PEVSA film in toluene showed small holes on the surface. The solvent-induced changes of ionic polymer films were reversibly switching corresponding to solvents. The PEVSA membranes fabricated with TIPS method showed the various texture morphologies from roughly flat to smoothly flat, threadlike, and tubular textures with the increase of the PEVSA concentration.
