- A cathode as an electron donor was examined to enhance reducing power for butyrate production by one acidogenic species, Clostridium tyrobutyricum BAS 7. Electrically reduced neutral red at a cathode was re-oxidized by NAD+ reduction in the cells and it induced to increase butyrate production without acetate formation. Cathode increased final butyrate concentration but not productivity. This result shows that the electron flow altered to NADH formation by external electron carriers (cathode) increased the yield and selectivity of reduced end-products like butyrate.
