Abstract
The AZO(Al doped Zinc Oxide) nano-rods self-assembled from nano-sheet, hierarchical and hollow nano-spheres were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction of aqueous solution containing ZnCl2•2H2O,AlN3O9∙9H2O and NaOH. Gas sensing properties of nano-size AZO nano-rod, hierarchical and hollow spheres are performed by the change of resistance. The microstructure of AZO spin-coat on Pt IDEs with size of 500x500 μm exhibitled a very uniform surface morphology. These were prepared by the calcination at 500°C for 60 min. Upon exposure to 50 ppm of CO gas at 250 oC, both AZO hollow and hierarchical nanospheres exhibited ~20 of high sensitivity and ~10s of fast response time at 1 V of applied voltage. These results are clearly showing that hierarchical and hollow nanostructures simultaneously increase both the gas sensitity and the response time. This is be explained by the rapid and effective gas diffusion through via the porous structures. Various synthetic strategies to prepare such hierarchical and hollow nanostructures for sensor applications are reviewed and the principle parameters and mechanism to enhance the gas sensing characteristics are investigated.
