- GO powder from graphite was prepared by a modified Hummers method. The dispersed GO in DMF was incorporated into PAN dissolved in DMF. GO/PAN composite film containing 20 wt% of GO was prepared using a conventional solution casting method. DSC results showed a significant decrease of cyclization temperature of PAN containing GO. It is likely that functional groups on the surface of GO initiated cyclization of PAN. Stabilization was performed in air at 230°C for 8 hrs. Volume resistivity of stabilized GO/PAN films containing 20 wt% of GO was 200 Ω-cm whereas pure PAN films showed a volume resistivity of more than 1012 Ω-cm. GO was heat treated under same stabilization condition to verify the function of GO after the stabilization. TGA of heat treated GO at 230°C for 8 hrs showed a significantly higher decomposition temperature compared to untreated GO, indicating that the stabilization condition led to a partial reduction of GO. Therefore, it is suggested that reduced GO in the composites help to reduce the volume resistivity of GO/PAN composites. However, there was no significant difference of volume resistivity between PAN and GO/PAN composites after carbonization.
