Abstract
Concentrations of 0.03 mgP/L have been established as criteria to determine excessive algae growth in confined water bodies. Accordingly, many countries are beginning to legislate and enforce regulations limiting P discharge levels to 0.1 mg/L or even less. Therefore, the efficient removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions has great importance to protect the release of P into the aquatic environment. In the present study, performance of various gel-typed and porous-typed anion exchange resins(AERs) manufactured in South Korea were evaluated for the sorption removal of phosphate from aqueous solutions. In order to examine the effects of resin type, co-existing anions, resin amount, pH, and ionic form of AERs on the adsorption removal, batch shaking sorption experiments were performed and the experimental data were evaluated on the bases of removal efficiencies and kinetics. The observed maximum sorption capacity and pseudo first order rate constant of tested AERs under various operational conditions was found as 21.7 mg PO4 3--P/g AER and 8.0 hr- 1, respectively.
