- In electrolysis, the obstacle would be an anodic reaction for water oxidation where substantial energy loss occurs mainly due to the large overpotential. Numerous electrocatalysts have been applied to reduce the overpotential in the water oxidation including expensive precious metals (e.g. Ir, Ru, and Rh). In this study, we demonstrate successful fabrication of different sized Co3O4 electrocatalyst films at low temperature (~50 ℃) on a stainless steel substrate by a paste coating method using Nafion as a binder. The structural characteristics of Co3O4 films were investigated by SEM, XRD and BET. We also investigated the electrochemical characteristics of the films with different particle sizes using classical electrochemical analysis. Based on the cyclic voltammetric measurements, the number of active sites of the films was estimated to 57.8, 86.1 and 95.7 mC cm-2 for the films with particle size of 145.9, 63.3 and 36.5nm, respectively. The highest hydrogen production rate was measured to 39.6 ml/h for the film with particle size of 38.9 nm. The details will be discussed in the presentation.
