Abstract
This paper presents a user-centered interaction method to manipulate 3D contents by mapping a user-created space onto a virtual coordinate space. For the natural 3D interaction, users need to be allowed to describe and register their own manipulating space without environmental and physical restriction. In order to register a user-created space, a user draws a 3D area with a hand-held device in front of the user. Then, the area is registered as a manipulating space of the user, which corresponds to the virtual 3D space. To evaluate the space registration, we implemented a haptic device combined with a 3D motion tracker and a virtual environment that contains controllable 3D objects. Through user study, we investigate the characteristics of our approach by changing various conditions that a user is prone to encounter during 3D remote interaction.
