- Various MEMS based silicon neural probes have been
introduced to simultaneously record as well as stimulate multiple
sites for studying brain for electrical stimulation.
However, electrical stimulation may damage the neurons
and also suffers from poor spatial resolution limited by
propagation of electrical pulse through neurons and solution. Also,
the rigidity of silicon devices induces tissue damage during
So, recently optical stimulation has been reported as an
alternative to electrical stimulation with potential advantages such
as noncontact stimulation and investigated to selectively stimulate
the specific nerves.
In this paper, we report a neural probe which can optical
stimulate though optical waveguide and record extracellular
neural signals though platinum tetrodes. Especially, we use
biocompatible and flexible polymer(SU-8) only for probe shank
and optical waveguide which can reduce neuron damage during
probe insertion compared with Si-based neural probe. And SU-8
waveguide can optical stimulation is enough to optically stimulate
