- A silica aerogel composed of nano sized (1-100 nm) particles linking as the open-cell structure has high specific surface area (500-1200 ㎡/g), low density (0.003-0.1 g/㎤) and low thermal conductivity (0.013-0.14 W/m•K) [1,2]. Therefore, adiabatic capability makes silica aerogel have very high potential applications in thermal insulation. [3,4]. However, the silica aerogel is brittle and easy to be broken up because of its high porosity. Because of these disadvantages of the silica aerogel, the powder form of the silica aerogel is limited as a conventional insulation material. So, silica aerogel/polymer binding system was proposed by M.Schmidt et al.  and thermosetting polymer was used in order to improve the service temperature of composites . In this study, the silica aerogel was investigated by a new modified technique for the synthesis and were prepared with respect to volume fraction of aerogel in order to develop thermally insulative composites. Thermal conductivity of the composites with plasma treated aerogel was also investigated to enhance adiabatic properties.
