- We demonstrated that liquid crystal (LC) functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT-LC) by substituting phenylcyclohexyl (PCH) mesogenic moieties into MWNT surface through covalent linkage can be dispersed in thermotropic host N-LC. Furthermore, the host N-LC showed a good miscibility when the MWNT-LC was added up to 5 wt%. This is due to a substantial affinity between the LC moieties on MWNT and the host N-LC molecules. By virtue of good miscibility of MWNT-LC, we could align the MWNT-LC by application of magnetic field. Actually, the dichroic ratio of D-band and G-band were calculated as 3.6. The order parameter of 0.46 for the G-band peak at 1580 cm-1 was calculated. We can thus conclude that our CNT order parameter of 0.46 is similar to the order parameter of host N-LC, S = 0.55. It is expected that the liquid crystalline functionalized carbon materials might be feasible for obtaining a higher degree of orientational order structures.
