- As the aerogel whose thermal conductivity is one of the lowest in human history draws more interest, an appropriate processing method for an aerogel composite is required because the aerogel is brittle and it is not easy to fabricate the composite due to its high porosity. To investigate the relationship between the internal structure of the aerogel and the thermal conductivity of the composite, the thermal conductivity of the aerogel/epoxy composite was measured while varying the volume fraction of the aerogel and the aerogel type such as as-recieved or plasma-treated. The thermal conductivity of aerogel/epoxy composite was lower than that of epoxy matrix, but high thermal conductivity of the composite was unexpectedly obtained because pores of the aerogel were filled with the epoxy resin during the processing of the composite. The thermal conductivity of composite including plasma treated aerogel was lower than that of composite including pristine aerogel because of the increased interface thermal resistance which was caused by expanded surface area by plasma treatment.
