Abstract
Multilayer graphene is directly grown in an evaporator with a single-step process. Nickel layer is deposited on a targeted substrate as a catalyst and a host for carbon atoms. The substrate is heated after depositing the nickel layer in order for carbon atoms to diffuse into the catalyst-substrate interface for graphene crystallization. The graphene formation directly on the substrate is verified by demonstrating a graphene saturable absorber for laser mode-locking at an operating center wavelength of 1569.4 nm, a pulse duration of 1.35 ps, and a repetition rate of 31.6 MHz.
