- Tryptophan is an essential amino acid. This amino acid and its metabolites are mostly
biologically active and related to pathogenesis of various diseases. Therefore it is noteworthy to
quantify tryptophan and its metabolites to identify their functions. In this study the quantitative
analytical method for tryptophan and its 6 metabolites (indole-3-lactic acid, anthranilic acid,
nicotinic acid, kynurenine, kynurenic acid and 3-indoxyl sulfate) in plasma was developed using
liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
