Abstract
This paper outlines a comprehensive process planning system for machining and assembly developed as part of the c-MES (configurable Manufacturing Execution System) platform. The system comprises three subsystems: feature extraction, machining process planning and assembly planning systems. The feature extraction system enables a user to extract the manufacturing features defined in the STEP AP224 from the modeling data of a part and specify their tolerances, surface roughness and geometrical relationships interactively. The machining process planning system infers the operations required for manufacturing the features using an ontological representation of relevant knowledge. Then, appropriate machines are assigned to the operations and setups with a proper sequence are determined. For each setup, specific cutting tools are determined with machining parameters. The assembly planning system generates the optimal assembly sequence automatically based on the parts liaison graph. Proper assembly methods and the corresponding equipments are also planned using the knowledge on locking and fitting. Prototypes of the subsystems are currently tested at a medium-sized manufacturer producing automobile products and the feedback is being discussed for the future improvement.
