Abstract
Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone, and widely used to boost the athletic performance in sports. Traditionally, the determination of anabolic steroids is performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with the electron impact ionization as their trimethylsilyl (TMS)-derivatives. Recently, various analytical methods have been developed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with electrospray ionization. In this study, we investigated new analytical technique using gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization/high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (GC-APCI/Q-TOF) as TMS-derivatives of steroids. The technique has been successfully applied to the identification of TMS-derivatives of steroids in spiked urine. As a result, TMS-derivatives of steroids could be easily ionized as the radical cation by this ion source and steroids in urine sample were completely analyzed in GC-APCI/Q-TOF.
