- Anabolic steroids are synthetic derivatives of the male hormone, and widely used to boost the athletic performance in sports. Traditionally, the determination of anabolic steroids is performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with the electron impact ionization as their trimethylsilyl (TMS)-derivatives. Recently, various analytical methods have been developed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) with electrospray ionization. In this study, we investigated new analytical technique using gas chromatography-atmospheric pressure chemical ionization/high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (GC-APCI/Q-TOF) as TMS-derivatives of steroids. The technique has been successfully applied to the identification of TMS-derivatives of steroids in spiked urine. As a result, TMS-derivatives of steroids could be easily ionized as the radical cation by this ion source and steroids in urine sample were completely analyzed in GC-APCI/Q-TOF.
