- Wet wipes can serve a number of personal and household purposes. They are made by water or other liquid like alkoxyalcohols. Alkoxyalcohols, including propylene glycol ethers and ethylene glycol ethers, are used coalescing, coupling and dispersing agents in various consumer products like wet wipes and cleaning applications. These compounds are known as the chronic toxicity and carcinogenicity to animal. The metabolites of alkoxyalcohols such as 2-methoxypropionic acid and 2-ethoxypropionic acid have been reported toxicity to human. The aim of this study was carried out to develop analytical method of alkoxyalcohols using headspace gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. We performed comparison with various experimental conditions such as influence of salting out effect (30 % NaCl), incubation temperature (at 90 ℃) and time (for 40 min). The samples were squeezed solvent from a pack of wet wipes. The calibration curve was established over 0.002 – 4 μgmL-1 (R2 > 0.99). The limit of detection was ranged 2 - 200 ngmL-1. The precision of the method for the determination of ten alkoxyalchohols was within 6.3 – 28.4 % in intraday (n=5) and 6.3 – 12.7 % in inter day for five days. The accuracy of the method was within 2.8 – 19.2 % in intraday and 1.6 – 19.4 % in inter days. This method was detected (2-methoxymethylethoxy)propanol, 2-phenoxyethanol and 1-phenoxy-2-propanol in wet wipes. Generally, 2-phenoxyethanol is used in water-based binding agents and preservatives in wet wipes.
