- In this paper, we propose tapered reflectors which have stair-like structures focusing scattered infrared (IR) rays to enhance detection performance of an NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) CO2 sensor. We demonstrate that the sensitivity of the output voltage is increased up to 2 and 1.27 times in the simulations and experiments respectively compared to the case when the normal-tapered reflectors are used. The results using the stair-like structure tapered reflector also proved its advantage over change in temperature and humidity. Because the proposed structure can be applied to any type of optical cavity without major modifications, we expect that it can resolve the performance limitations of low-end NDIR gas sensors.
