Abstract
A 5 L liquid hydrogen storage tank has been designed, fabricated and tested to investigate boil-off rate of liquid hydrogen. Two G-10 CR tubes are located between upper stainless steel flange and inner storage tank to reduce heat conduction loss. A vapor cooled radiation shield was made of oxygen free high thermal conductivity copper to reduce radiation heat loss to the inner tank. Multi-layer insulations were applied on outer surface of the radiation shield to minimize radiation heat loss in conjunction with high vacuum. A capacitance type liquid level sensor and silicon diode temperature sensors were used to measure boil-off rate. A series of performance tests were done for liquid nitrogen and liquid helium to compare with design parameters.
