Abstract
 Dense and hierarchical microsphere structured tin oxide (SnO2) was successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and used as anode material for LIB.  This unique structure significantly enhances the electroactive surface areas of the SnO2, leading to better interfacial/chemical distributions at the nanoscale, fast ion and electron transfer and good strain accommodation.  Thus, high initial capacity (~1614 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1) and initial Coulombic efficiency (62.8%) have been realized in the hierarchical structure SnO2 anode.  The improved electrochemical performance of the hierarchical SnO2 can be attributed to compensation of the mechanical strain and to alleviation of the pulverization of active anode material.
