Abstract
Pores of the aerogel in the silica aerogel powder/epoxy composites were filled with epoxy matrix as the composites were prepared, revealing the poor insulating property of the composites. This finding suggests that the pores of the aerogel should be preserved in the silica aerogel powder/polymer composite to achieve low thermal conductivity. A new method for the preparation of the silica aerogel powder/ polyimide composite was developed to preserve the pores in the aerogel using a multi-step drying process. The aerogel pores were filled in the PAA solution, but the pore structure was reconstructed during this drying process. The thermal conductivity of the composites was reduced as the volume percentage was increased. At 50% volume of the aerogel, the minimum thermal conductivity of the polyimide composite was 0.03 W/m·K. This indicates that polyimide composites can be fabricated with better insulating properties than epoxy composites. Preserved aerogel pores in the polyimide composites were observed by FE-SEM images showing the fractured surface of the composites. In addition, TGA analysis confirmed the excellent high-temperature stability of the polyimide composites, with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of over 400 ℃.
