- Proton Exchange membranes are used in fuel cells and electrolysers. In these devices, changes in the relative humidity of the gas streams induce membrane swelling and shrinking. Especially in-plane swelling and shrinking can lead to a dimensional mismatch of membrane and electrode, resulting in delamination of the membrane electrode assembly. In addition, swelling and shrinking leads to mechanical and chemo-mechanical degradation.
