Abstract
Manipulation of microfluids or particles is an important technique in the fields of chemistry, biology, and medical sciences. In particular, the transport, concentration and sorting of small particles on a planar substrate by using a surface acoustic wave has attracted considerable interest because of its advantages, such as low power consumption, integration and miniaturization of devices, and fast response time. Here we demonstrate acoustic manipulation of micro fluorescence particles in fluid inside a micro-capillary tube rather than on a plate. The capillary tube serves as a mechanical guide for both the particles and the acoustic wave, where the acoustic interaction occurs very efficiently over a long working range. The capillary-based linear system is attractive because the capillary can be replaced by hollow optical fibers so that the optical wave as well as the particles and acoustic wave is guided by the fiber for optical detection or diagnosis.
