Abstract
A recentlydevised,molecularlayer-by-layer(mLbL)approachbasedonthealternativecross-linkingof monomers wasemployedtofabricatehigh-performancethin film composite(TFC)forwardosmosis(FO) membranes withexcellentrejectiontowardmonovalentNaClsalt.Anultrathinandhighlydense polyamide(PA)selectivelayerwithapreciselycontrolledstructurewascreatedonatailoredporous support viamLbL.TheintrinsicseparationpropertiesofthemLbL-assembledTFCmembraneswere tuned byadjustingthemLbLcyclenumbertooptimizetheFOperformance.ThebestFOperformance wasachievedat10mLbLcycles(mLbL-10),wherethepermeabilityandselectivitywereproperly balanced. Importantly,themLbL-10membraneexhibitedsuperiorFOperformancecomparedtothe commercial HTIFOmembranesaswellashand-castTFCmembranespreparedbytheconventional interfacial polymerization:themLbL-10membraneshowed 3.5 timeshigherwater flux, 60% lower reversesalt flux and 85% lowerspecific salt flux comparedtothecellulosetriacetateHTImembrane, with 0.5MNaCldrawsolutionandDIwaterfeedsolutioninFOmode.Thestabilityandtheassociated membrane performanceofthemLbL-assembledmembranedependingontheionicstrengthofthe environmentwereexplainedbytheswellingbehaviorofthepolyelectrolyte-assembledinterlayer adhered underneaththePAselectivelayer.
