|dc.description.abstract||Although glycerol is an attractive feedstock for biochemical production, a high production of 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BD) from glycerol has been hampered because of a considerable 1,3-propandiol (1,3-PD) formation. In this study, we report the high production of 2,3-BD from glycerol using Raoultella ornithinolytica B6 without 1,3-PD formation. To optimize of fermentation conditions for 2,3-BD production by R. ornithinolytica B6 from glycerol, the influences of agitation speeds were investigated. In the fed-batch fermentation using glycerol without pH control, the final 2,3-BD concentration increased with an agitation speed (23.8 g/L at 200 rpm, 23.3 g/L at 300 rpm, and 36.4 g/L at 400 rpm) and 2,3-BD productivity also increased (0.22 g/L/h at 200 rpm, 0.47 g/L/h at 300 rpm, 0.74 g/L/h at 400 rpm). Further improvement of 2,3-BD production was achieved by pH control. The pH decreased from pH 7.0 to 5.5 during 9 hours of fermentation, and then the pH was maintained above 5.5 with 5 N KOH. Finally, 60.7 g/L 2,3-BD was obtained with 0.85 g/L/h of productivity from glycerol. This is the first report on 2,3-BD production from glycerol by Raoultella genus.||-|
