Abstract
Membrane distillation (MD) is the thermally driven water separation process based on the vapor pressure difference across the membrane. Due to its high rejection to the non-volatile matters, use of the relatively low graded heat (solar or waste heat) and high feasibility to the very saline waters, MD is considered as the next generation desalination technology. Moreover, there is no TMP (trans-membrane pressure) across the membrane in the MD process, it has been known that the fouling issue is not significant compared to the conventional desalination process (RO, reverse osmosis). However, recent studies showed that severe fouling (including scaling) occurred during the various MD processes. In this study, fouling mechanisms were analyzed according to the various feed solutions. And as a pretreatment process, we applied the zeolite based filter system. The effect of the zeolite based filter system to the MD fouling was analyzed by the MD performance test.
