Abstract
A newfabricationtechniqueisdevisedtosynthesizeconformalSicore– shellnanoparticles(NPs)with Si boridenanoshellbyreactingthesurfaceatomsofSiNPs(50– 200 nmdiameter)withamoltensaltof sodium borohydride.Theshelllayer,about10– 20 nmthick,consistsofamixtureofcrystallinephase (SiBx) andotheramorphousphasesasidentifiedbyTEMandEELSanalysis.Newabsorbancepeaksfor Si– Si boridecore– shellNPsappearatthewavenumberof940and777– 677cm1 in FT-IRanalysis. TGA analysisrevealsthatthecore– shellstructuredSi– Si borideNPsexhibitaremarkablyimproved resistancetothermaloxidationbyafactorof4.6at750 1C andatbyafactorof3.5at850 1C compared tobareSi.Opticalmeasurementsshowthat spectrallyselectivecoating(SSC)layersmade of Si– Si borideNPshaveasuperioropticalstabilitytothatofthebareSiNPsafterannealingathigh temperature,anddesirablyexhibitalowerreflectanceinthevisiblespectrumrangethanthebareSi NPs.Thesesurface-protected,oxidation-resistantsemiconductormaterialsandtheirnovelfabrica- tionmethodsexhibitfurtherbroadapplicability ofboridenanolayerswhichcanbeusedforhigh temperatureapplicationssuchassolarthermalpowergeneration.
