Abstract
Characteristics of core and cladding modes in a solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with C6V symmetry are numerically analyzed using a finite element method. An inner cladding with a step index profile is used in place of a holey cladding in the calculation. It is found that light cannot be confined only in the inner cladding region. Some cladding modes do not exist in the presence of outer silica cladding.
