<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">Alkali&#x20;lignin,&#x20;a&#x20;byproduct&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;pulping&#x20;process,&#x20;was&#x20;depolymerized&#x20;using&#x20;Pt&#x20;nanoparticle&#x20;catalysts.&#x20;A&#x20;depolymerized&#x20;lignin&#x20;with&#x20;a&#x20;lower&#x20;molecular&#x20;weight&#x20;was&#x20;obtained&#x20;and&#x20;characterized&#x20;with&#x20;GPC&#x20;and&#x20;NMR.&#x20;P-31-NMR&#x20;using&#x20;OH-sensitive&#x20;probing&#x20;molecules&#x20;showed&#x20;the&#x20;formation&#x20;of&#x20;guaiacyl&#x20;OHs&#x20;during&#x20;the&#x20;reaction,&#x20;indicating&#x20;the&#x20;cleavage&#x20;of&#x20;guaiacyl&#x20;ether&#x20;bonds.</dcvalue>
