<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">A&#x20;bundle&#x20;of&#x20;carbon&#x20;fibers&#x20;(CFs)&#x20;with&#x20;24,000&#x20;filaments&#x20;was&#x20;prepared&#x20;using&#x20;atmospheric&#x20;pressure&#x20;plasma&#x20;and&#x20;heat&#x20;simultaneously&#x20;for&#x20;only&#x20;30&#x20;min,&#x20;followed&#x20;by&#x20;the&#x20;carbonization&#x20;process.&#x20;Conventional&#x20;thermal&#x20;stabilization&#x20;process&#x20;takes&#x20;more&#x20;than&#x20;few&#x20;hours&#x20;to&#x20;prevent&#x20;the&#x20;ignition&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;polyacrylonitrile&#x20;(PAN)&#x20;fiber&#x20;when&#x20;large-tow&#x20;PAN&#x20;fibers&#x20;are&#x20;stabilized.&#x20;The&#x20;CFs&#x20;produced&#x20;using&#x20;the&#x20;plasma&#x20;stabilization&#x20;process&#x20;had&#x20;a&#x20;tensile&#x20;strength&#x20;as&#x20;high&#x20;as&#x20;2.6&#x20;GPa.&#x20;This&#x20;strength&#x20;level,&#x20;which&#x20;is&#x20;slightly&#x20;higher&#x20;than&#x20;that&#x20;of&#x20;CFs&#x20;stabilized&#x20;by&#x20;the&#x20;conventional&#x20;process&#x20;for&#x20;120&#x20;min,&#x20;satisfies&#x20;the&#x20;demands&#x20;in&#x20;automobile&#x20;applications.&#x20;It&#x20;is&#x20;believed&#x20;that&#x20;the&#x20;plasma-based&#x20;stabilization&#x20;process&#x20;provides&#x20;a&#x20;potential&#x20;solution&#x20;not&#x20;only&#x20;for&#x20;shortening&#x20;the&#x20;process&#x20;time&#x20;but&#x20;also&#x20;for&#x20;providing&#x20;continuous&#x20;stabilization&#x20;of&#x20;large-tow&#x20;carbon&#x20;fibers.&#x20;(C)&#x20;2015&#x20;Elsevier&#x20;Ltd.&#x20;All&#x20;rights&#x20;reserved.</dcvalue>
