<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">The&#x20;electrolyte&#x20;systems&#x20;used&#x20;for&#x20;lithium&#x20;ion&#x20;batteries&#x20;are&#x20;briefly&#x20;reviewed&#x20;and&#x20;the&#x20;problems&#x20;confronting&#x20;current&#x20;carbonate-based&#x20;electrolytes&#x20;are&#x20;discussed&#x20;in&#x20;terms&#x20;of&#x20;following&#x20;aspects&#x20;including&#x20;capacity,&#x20;temperature&#x20;limit,&#x20;safety&#x20;and&#x20;hazard,&#x20;and&#x20;ion&#x20;transport.&#x20;Various&#x20;efforts&#x20;to&#x20;apply&#x20;room&#x20;temperature&#x20;ionic&#x20;liquids&#x20;for&#x20;lithium&#x20;ion&#x20;battery&#x20;electrolytes&#x20;are&#x20;introduced&#x20;due&#x20;to&#x20;their&#x20;excellent&#x20;electrochemical&#x20;properties&#x20;such&#x20;as&#x20;non-flammability,&#x20;non-volatility,&#x20;chemical&#x20;inertness,&#x20;wide&#x20;electrochemical&#x20;windows,&#x20;high&#x20;conductivity,&#x20;and&#x20;wide&#x20;thermal&#x20;operating&#x20;ranges.</dcvalue>
