<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">Design&#x20;optimization&#x20;of&#x20;a&#x20;planar-type&#x20;head,&#x20;which&#x20;is&#x20;capable&#x20;of&#x20;producing&#x20;a&#x20;much&#x20;higher&#x20;write&#x20;field&#x20;than&#x20;a&#x20;conventional&#x20;head,&#x20;is&#x20;carried&#x20;out&#x20;by&#x20;head&#x20;trimming.&#x20;A&#x20;step-like&#x20;head&#x20;trimming&#x20;is&#x20;found&#x20;to&#x20;be&#x20;not&#x20;desirable,&#x20;resulting&#x20;in&#x20;a&#x20;high&#x20;half-width&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;head&#x20;profile.&#x20;A&#x20;very&#x20;high&#x20;write&#x20;field&#x20;of&#x20;11.8&#x20;kOe,&#x20;combined&#x20;with&#x20;small&#x20;values&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;half-width&#x20;and&#x20;the&#x20;side-writing&#x20;ratio,&#x20;is&#x20;obtained&#x20;in&#x20;a&#x20;suitably&#x20;trimmed&#x20;planar-type&#x20;head.&#x20;The&#x20;results&#x20;for&#x20;recorded&#x20;bit&#x20;pattern&#x20;generated&#x20;by&#x20;micromagnetic&#x20;computer&#x20;simulation&#x20;indicate&#x20;significantly&#x20;improved&#x20;recording&#x20;characteristics&#x20;with&#x20;the&#x20;use&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;suitably&#x20;trimmed&#x20;head.</dcvalue>
