<dcvalue element="description" qualifier="abstract">We&#x20;demonstrate&#x20;a&#x20;nonlinear&#x20;ellipsometric&#x20;method&#x20;for&#x20;measuring&#x20;both&#x20;the&#x20;magnitude&#x20;and&#x20;the&#x20;sign&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;second-order&#x20;cascaded&#x20;phase&#x20;shift&#x20;associated&#x20;with&#x20;the&#x20;type-I&#x20;second&#x20;harmonic&#x20;generation&#x20;process&#x20;in&#x20;a&#x20;MgO-doped&#x20;LiNbO3&#x20;single&#x20;crystal.&#x20;This&#x20;method&#x20;does&#x20;not&#x20;require&#x20;a&#x20;well-defined&#x20;beam&#x20;profile&#x20;or&#x20;interferometric&#x20;stability&#x20;because&#x20;phase&#x20;can&#x20;be&#x20;determined&#x20;by&#x20;simply&#x20;comparing&#x20;the&#x20;two&#x20;orthogonal&#x20;polarization&#x20;components&#x20;of&#x20;the&#x20;fundamental&#x20;output&#x20;beam.&#x20;(C)&#x20;1999&#x20;Elsevier&#x20;Science&#x20;B.V.&#x20;All&#x20;rights&#x20;reserved.</dcvalue>
